The Copenhagen University Hospital, backup power supply

New backup power supply system with diesel generators, UPS and central monitoring ensures that the Copenhagen University Hospital can continue operating in case of power failure. The high voltage system was also exchanged in order to meet safety demands and other new requirements.

Copenhagen University Hospital wanted to ensure it had sufficient backup power supply for the entire hospital in case of serious problems in the public electricity grid. Therefore, Balslev was asked to set up a 10 MW backup power system with 5 generators (each of 2 MW capacity)  which can be put into operation one by one according to the actual need. To feed the generators with fuel, a 50,000 litre diesel tank system was also installed.

Environmental concerns re. the air and noise levels

On the basis of analyses and investigation of the exhaust system, a 40 m high chimney was installed. In order to comply with the noise level requirements, the generator system is encapsulated in a sound absorbing baffle system, which minimizes the transfer of noise to the surrounding buildings.

UPS-system ensures stable power supply for the entire hospital

In a highly specialised hospital like the Copenhagen University Hospital, using advanced and energy demanding technologies, it is essential to maintain a constant voltage level in the electrical power supply. In case of a power failure in the distribution grid, the UPS-system (Uninterruptible Power Supply) ensures a stable voltage level until the backup power generators take over. In connection with the installation of the new backup power system, the existing UPS-system was subject to a comprehensive upgrade into a 2 x 330 kWA static/kinetic UPS system, designed to handle 150% for 2 minutes and up to 14 times the nominal power for 2 seconds. Furthermore, the new UPS-system was moved to a new physical location incl. new switchboards, cable routing etc.

Modernisation of the high voltage system

The project, which was finalised in 2010, also included replacement of all of the hospital's old high voltage systems in order to meet the latest requirements with regards to e.g. safety and required relays. At the same time, the method of supply via high voltage cables was changed into a circular connection, which allows the possibility to disconnect a possibly faulty stretch of cable. In this way, it is possible to maintain the power supply for the entire hospital via the supply points of the power supplier, Dong Energy.

Central monitoring system 

A new system to monitor backup power and high voltage was also established. The staff in charge of their operation are now able, via the existing central monitoring system, to follow the load on the individual transformers, the current power supply and all faults/alarms that have occurred. In the individual transformer substations it is also possible to get an overview of the condition of the station. For the transfer of alarms, faults etc. which need to be monitored centrally, a new fibre cable ring between the incoming locations was established.
