EnBW's wind farm Baltic 1

Balslev was responsible for the conceptual design of the transformer platform, the electrical and ventilation systems plus plumbing and fire protection systems for EnBW's new offshore wind farm Baltic 1 in the Baltic Sea

The German energy group EnBW owns the offshore wind park Baltic 1 situated in the Baltic Sea, approx. 16 km North of Darß/Zingst. It has a total capacity of 48.3 MW and began operating in 2010.

The wind farm's electrical output is supplied to the high voltage grid in the German federal state Mecklenburg/Vorpommern. The wind farm comprises a transformer platform and 21 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 2.3 MW.

Balslev was deeply involved in the design of the entire electrical infrastructure such as the wind farm's internal cabling, the routing to the wind turbines plus the design of auxilliary systems for the transformer platform. We were, among other things, responsible for the design and detailed specifiation of the following systems:

  • All high and low voltage electrical systems incl. distribution boards and earthing
  • Emergency supply with both diesel generator and UPS (uninterruptible power supply)
  • Specification of requirement for lights and lighting
  • Lightning and transient protection, including co-ordination of isolation
  • Electro-magnetic compatibility (EMC)
  • Security systems like e.g. video surveillance (CCTV).

In addition, we also carried out simulations of different load and short circuit conditions in the electrical systems to ensure correct selectivity and settingsof circuit-breakers and protection relays .

For the transformer platform's auxilliary systems BAlslev's engineers designed and specified:

  • An oil/water separation system including all piping
  • All installations for plumbing, heating and ventilation (HVAC)
  • Fire protection system incl. piping and pumps as well as planning of escape routes.

EnBW's wind farm Baltic 1 comprises 21 wind turbines and a transformer platform.
